What's in a Name?

The puma has many different names, such as mountain lion, cougar, and panther. This cat is known by more names then just about any other mammal. It does not matter what you call it, its still the same cat. Would you like to know how the puma got so many different names? Mostly because it has such a large range of living and people from different countries have called it so many names.

For example, an early Spanish explorers called it “leion”(lion) and "gato monte" (cat of the mountain),from which we call a mountain lion. The Incas gave the name “puma” to this cat. The cougar seems to have roots from an old South American Indian world. And panther is a general term for cats that have solid-colored coats.
